I started this post earlier in the week when the Ice Storm actually hit but then Christmas got in the way of everything and this got pushed back. But I'm here now to share of the photos I took from the day of the storm. First off I wanted to say that considering how bad this storm was, Richard and I were extremely lucky. I've never been more happy to live in a condo then I was when this storm happened.
Richard and I lost power on December 22nd between 1am-2am, and then lost hot water some time after 12pm the same day. Out of everyone in my family we were the only ones to have lost power and hot water, so my brother was nice enough to let Richard and I spend the night at his place because we were unsure of when things would be fixed. We were once again lucky enough to get power back that day just after 6pm. We have underground parking so we didn't have to chisel through an inch of ice to get into our cars like most people, and we weren't too worried about driveways either. Most people kept asking us if we were getting cold without heat but because we live on the west side of our building, we get the sun most of the day and therefore our condo very rarely gets cold. Honestly our biggest worry was that our food in our fridge and freezer would go off due to the lack of hydro. We lost a bag of shrimp which we bought the day before but it could have been a lot worse. Even now 7 days after the storm there are still people without power and hot water which is hard to believe. But people have been working around the clock to get this fixed as much as possible.
The only words I have for this storm was Hauntingly Beautiful. While it was terrible to learn just how many people were affected by it, it was definitely an opportunity to get out my camera and take some photos. To see twenty to forty year old trees snap under the weight of the ice, was insane. Some were broken on houses or cars, and blocking whole roads. It was dangerous to even go out for the fear that at any moment another branch could snap. Whats even worse is that some branches would snap but get caught within the trees so now there are 300lbs of ice stuck up in a tree just waiting to melt and do more damage. I think we will be seeing the after effects of the storm for a while until everything melts and city workers can go around and get rid of the dangers.
Below are some pictures I took from the day of. I'm sure if you live in the GTA you've seen photos like this or even took some of your own but here is what the damage was around me.

On Christmas Eve I was able to come home from work early and was greeted by what looked like a landscape that was dipped in glass. Everything sparkled and shined beneath the sunshine, and these pictures below don't even do justice to what it looked like in reality.
So there you have it. It's been a crazy week with the storm and Christmas. Now we are only a couple days away from 2014. Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season and are all recovering from their turkey comas.
